DIGITAL PRESERVATION PROJECT

This project so far consisted in carrying out a digital encoding of tapes, saving the resulting files on optical disks (CDs and DVDs). This approach is no more sufficient because of the limited real life of such supports, which obliges to cyclic re-saves every few years.

The envisaged solution consists in building a redundant Storage Server based on hard disk arrays. The system will be expandable to eventually contain all of the digitized data of the SSI Archives, controlled by a Database.

Such an Enterprise Storage system will really make the difference in the work of the Archives, as well as in the fruition of the Archives’ contents by Tibetologists, scholars and Dzogchen practitioners. It will provide storage redundancy ensuring that no data will ever be lost. From such a storage server contents could be easily compressed for the Web and made available to authorized users, realizing the vision of fully on-line Archives.

PROGETTO DI ARCHIVIAZIONE DIGITALE

Questo progetto fino ad ora è consistiito nella codifica digitale delle cassette e nel salvataggio dei file così prodotti su supporto ottico (CD o DVD). Questo approccio non è più sufficiente alla luce della limitata durata reale di tali supporti, che costringe a un loro rinnovo ciclico ogni 3-4 anni.

Si vuole quindi realizzare uno Storage Server basato su batterie di dischi rigidi. Il sistema potrà essere espanso secondo le necessità ed arriverà ad includere tutti i contenuti digitalizzati degli Archivi dell’ISS, gestiti da un Database.

Un simile Enterprise Storage system sarà di immenso beneficio al lavoro degli Archivi, e ne renderà possibile la fruizione dei contenuti agli studiosi della cultura tibetana e ai praticanti dello Dzogchen.

Il sistema fornirà uno storage ridondante in modo da assicurare che nessun dato possa andare perduto. Da un tale Storage Server I contenuti potranno essere resi disponibili via Web agli utenti autorizzati, realizzando la visione di un Archivio totalmente on-line.
